I suggest you post the question anew providing more info: what type "roof tiles," from what area (hip, edge, valley, etc) of the roof have you detected roofing felt falling away, what is the condition of the tiles in that or those area/s, what is the roof slope in the area of deterioration?

It is difficult to understand how the underlying felt could have deteriorated absent deterioration of the overlying shingles or tiles. If the deterioration of the felt (and tiles?) has resulted from some external cause, such as long term accumulation of leaves in a valley or along a gutter, and is isolated in a specific area, patching may suffice. Otherwise a re-roof may be the more prudent solution.

Best practice will probably be to have a roofing contractor inspect and recommend a fix.

Consult a roofer who has a respectable reputation in the community, member of the chamber of commerce, with a physical office from which business is conducted (rather than an office in the cab of a truck). At risk of engaging in stereotypes, sometimes construction sub-contractors are less than reliable. The more subatantial a contractor's ties to the community are, the longer he has been in the business, the greater the probability for competent services performed with quality materials.

A re-roof is very expensive, and the quality of materials as well as workmanship is important to a worry-free twenty five years under that new roof. Since, because of lack of experience, you cannot rely upon your intuition to determine what is okay and not okay regarding your roof, get your facts from as many sources as practicable...acquaintances who have had a re-roof, who are in the construction business, who are in a position to know the reputation of roofers, etc.

Its gone brittle and is breaking off, i bet ?

Not a job that can be done piece meal. It'll need the roof stripping back and breathable felt put underneath.

Not the end of the world.

A weeks work - £500-£2000 depending on "stuff"

They sell something called roof wrap, that is the best. I did the roof here two ago and didn't know about it. I have since found about it. It is like house wrap only black.

The only real answer is to strip and recover the roof. Expensive
