It is not needed..Approx. all current cable modems have an option of connectivity through both LAN card and USB..

for connectivity through USB, you would have to install drivers for the modem, which are usually shipped with the device..If you have not got the device drivers, then probably you can download the drivers from the manufacturer's website or can use generic drivers provided in Win XP..

Usually drivers for such devices are commonly available on internet...

The LAN card will work better, but the USB port will work too, you just need to install the drivers if you are using USB.

If you use usb you will need to install the drivers or get a pci nic card.

Use a lan card it is much faster.
