What impact have past third parties had on American Politics?

In the 1800's, and the early 1900's, they could swing 5-10% of a Presidential vote. Bull Moose Party almost won! Perot made a impact, and could of won, but he blew it.
Now, most of them are far right parties, and are out of touch.

usually a third party is enough of a vote threat that he makes both other parties address issues that they might not of
