Genealogy - Gynae* is a prefix for something completely different LOL!
Ancestry.co.uk (or.com for other places) and GenesReunited.com are probably good places for information. There's loads of info on the web - try looking up "family tree" or "Genealogy".
If you've lived in the local area for some time local library is a good place too.
Best place to start - ask around your relatives, they will have lots of interesting stories to tell you and there maybe someone who has done a lot of the work for you already!

There are loads around, However most are crap. I use Family Maker..
You can get softwares like Heredis, family legends, etc...
In terms of website, Ancestry.com is great but to really make the most of it, you need to subscribe (well worth it). Genesreunited has proved helpful for me too.
All depends where your orgins are too. Some are most specialised in some part of the world than others. Gencircles can be great

I'm not sure about free software, but I've found the free services at:
http://www.ancestry.com/
to be excellent. You can search the majority of their databases for free and it allows you to build up a family tree.
If you want to go further back, you can access their "rarer" databases by paying a monthly subscription.

genesreunited.co.uk lets you build an online family tree, costs nothing to register and put data in, you have to pay to message other people and see theirs.
