This is a very complicated question and I believe there are several factors involved:
1) Opposite Aims: Israel want the land of the Palestinians, the Palestinians want their land back. These are conflicting aims which are difficult to obtain a compromise to, as both sides see a compromise as a defeat in their objectives.
2) Resources: The wider middle east is a resource rich country (oil in particular, religion to a lesser extent). Where there are valuable resources there will always be conflict. With less resources becoming a fact of the 21st century, these resources will become even more valuable for those depend on them. Oil is like a drug to the western countries, without it governments could fall.
3) Politics: I know least about this, but I suspect ongoing conflict has a lot to do with the political will of countries both within the middle east and outside the middle east.
These are just my opinions on the subject. It is a complicated situation and one that may take a long to resolve - if ever...

Saudi Arabia is the home to the largest energy center on the planet. Think of it like the planet's fontanel or "crown chakra". This is where human creation (and changes are, all life) began. This is no secret to the governments and powers of the world that have been trying for centuries to gain control over this region. Yes, it is also about oil, but there is a reason why there is so much oil in the Middle East and that is this that this "power center" i like a magnet for oil. I know this sounds a bit wookie for the modern ear, but if you dig deep enough into ancient text, this energy or power center/ vortex is mentioned on several occasions. This was the location for the "garden of eden" and the so called breadbasket of humanity. It was once a rich and thriving piece of land filled with a large diversity of plant and animal life. All these plants and animals have since decayed into the large oil reserves that we are now raping from miles under the earth's crust. Through the processes of over farming and irresponsible land stewardship, this area is now a desert.

In the main it's because there is no common purpose amongst the Arab peoples and even more so amongst the Arab states. Look at Palestine, Fatah and Hamas see each other as the enemy. Look at Iraq, the greatest number of Iraqis being killed are being killed by Iraqis. The Shia and the Sunni's have different agendas.
All across the Middle East you have factions that wish to take power at the expense of someone else.
You have Democracies, Theocracies, Monarchies and Dictatorships, how are they going to come together in the interests of all Arabs?

I don't believe there will be peace in the middle east until the end of days (not just because that's what the bible says).
1. This region has been war torn for centuries- the peoples living there have been desensitized to violence, human life is seen as expendable by religious extremists and even by family members who believe they are defending their families honor.
2.Until, the citizens of the region who desire peace take up the flag of peace there will be no peace. No one else, no other army, will be able to change the barbaric inhabitants of this region into civilized, educated people. The civilized and educated of that region need to take control of their government, their church, and of their schools and begin to teach these people something other than killing each other.
3. I think the entire region may need to be cleansed of it's peoples before peace will ever start. The civilized and moral are either to cowardly to stand up for peace in their homeland or there
are just not enough peace loving peoples to do the job.
4. In order for this peace to become indoctrinated into these people it is going to take a major overhauling of thought processes of a very large group of people- I believe only one man can do that and if comes back it will be the end of days

Religion in the middle east is the problem with no peace in that region and the people are being kept uneducated about the rest of the world by the "religious" "leaders"
so they can control the masses and keep them back in the 7th Century and stop blaming the USA for all of their problems.

And God said to Abram, "I will make unto you a great nation."
What God did not say is, you should have only one son to carry this out. Abraham screwed up by listening to Sara and he had sex with her hand maid. She birthed Ishmael, Israel's older brother. After Israel was born, Sara made Abraham send Ishmael and his mother away. Well God kept his promise and formed a great nation from each of Abraham's sons and those fellows have been fighting like dogs ever since.

Say it isn't so. We were so sure that after three years of the US being there could've stopped a few thousand years of fighting. Well, back to the drawing board.
Really, we're not there to stabilize an entire region. Just one country.

It might help to leave them alone without political interference and manipulation from the west. They will eventually find a way to live together if not at least it will be their own doing and they cant blame us.
