something that works on alternate current and that which can be made easily at home.. thanks a lot..

i need it to make a thing which starts and the shuts after say 3 minutes and remains shut for 3 minutes before starting again

I would suggest using a microcontroller, or programable electronic timer, get a kit from your local electronics store.
Make a power supply and connect it to a crystal oscillator have the output run a number of binary counters set the outputs and inputs so that one of the outputs will form a square wave 3 minutes on 3 minutes off.

First use a power supply to convert AC to DC at about 5Volts, so that you can use some standard ICs.

You could also use a geared down electric motor which rotates very slowely and place contacts on it so that it makes contact 3minutes on and 3 minutes off.
