I teach snowboarding at a local mountain and alot of people ask me that question. The fact that you ski won't help or hurt your actual riding, but it will make you more comfortable on the snow, especially falling, and the types or snow. Giving you an edge up on all the tourists coming in from Arizona or so-cal. The learning curve on snowboarding is steep, so you're gonna haveta be willing to sit around on the snow a bit to learn how to turn and ride if you want to get in a group lesson. I promise you, once you get that first real run in, if its your kinda thing, you won't be able to quit.
A bit of advice. If you can, get a private lesson with a teacher, it might be more expensive, but you get to be the only student in the class and learn to ride much faster. I've had students fly through a private and be ready to hit the lifts an hour after an hour.
Oh, and if you can, learn at a small ski area, where there won't be too many people, and it won't be steep, and your teacher will know what they're doing.
I've been boarding for 6 years, doing my first competition in a week, and snowboarding is totally worth the effort to learn.

Ok, I don't care if I get picked as best answer or get a lot of negative votes or whatever. There's a lot of misinformation going on here from people who have clearly never gotten any good at skiing. If you want to know the facts read on:
Up until very recently, snowboarding has been cooler. So people who were rubbish at skiing switched to it. They found it easy to get good at quickly, having spent years trying but failing to reach a reasonable standard on skis. That's why they're so negative about skiing. People who were new to snowsports also made a beeline for snowboarding, and also found it quick and easy to get to a level where they could have fun. They're totally ignorant but repeat what they hear. "Newschool" skiing is redefining cool but that's another story.
Snowboarding is great fun (except on ice and moguls). It's much easier to learn and get to a reasonable standard on, particularly if you've skied before (as you already understand edges, and how a ski/board turns, know how snow feels and are comfortable on a slope). Lots of people find the technique comes naturally once they give up their fear (boarding is at least 50% confidence) and get that feeling of free flowing movement, that many skiers take years of skiing time to get to, after just a couple of weeks! Yes, the first one or two days of learning are tougher in that you fall a lot and it all feels unstable (unless you're a surfer or skateboarder), but after that it's plain sailing/sliding. If you want something quick to get reasonably good at, so you can get up and around the mountain as soon as poss, while having a great time, go boarding.
But don't let anyone tell you it's more difficult or more versatile, more fun or faster than skiing. It isn't.

It is different for everyone. The main big difference, I suggest you really think about what I say. On skis you have four edges and you use them from the sides fo your feet. On a snowboard you only have two edges and you use your heels and toes. You are completly strapped to the board, where skiing gives you a little more freedom with your feet. However, snowboard boots are comfy and face it, ski boots are not! That would be reason enough for me to want to switch. I do not know that one is easier than the other, they are both difficult to learn, however, I think that if you want to learn how to snowboard and you know already how to ski, think about your edges, how and why you use them on skis, and then transfer that to a snowboard and its edges. I really taught myself when it came to snowboarding, I layed in bed one night (many nights) and day dreamed I was on a snowboard and riding. Think, I want to turn right and slow down, with your edges on a snowboard, which edge ( toe or heal) do I use? It is thoughts like that, that will help you learn. Good luck, do not give up cause then you will never learn. I have faith in you.

Skiing is hard to learn but snowboarding (I mean riding, not tricks) is easier. From skis you know how to move on the snow, you are familiar with the slopes. Trust me, it´s my own experience, I was able to ride normally after two or three days of practise. On the other hand people who have never tried skiing spend longer time with only falling down with no result. In snowboarding it´s just about going down, in skiing you have to, as you of course know from your experience, concentrate on many different things.

snowboarding is way easier than skiing, and having skied you have a sense of sliding over the snow and how to use your edges (I hope) this will make snowbarding infinitly easier, however as someone else mentioned by prepared for a painful day, it is hard to catch an edge on skiis but very easy on a snowbard and you will do it often, as for skiing though I rode a snowboard for 15 years and have been skiing to the last 3 and will never go back I came full circle

I skied for over ten years and loved it. I tried snowboarding once and have never skied since. The first day on a snowboard is painfull. When you wreck on a snowboard, your butt or your hands & knees are the first thing to hit the snow. It takes a day or two to learn how to turn, but once you learn how it is more fun than skiing (just have to avoid runs with moguls). The best thing to do if you decide to try it is to buy a helmet and stretch.

it is way different snow boarding is more like in-line skating or wind surfing, but in my mind it is the better sport i love both. boarding takes a little less skill i would say until it come to tricks then it takes more but it is way funner so hit the slopes and check the board you will love it.
