A white wedding is a term for a traditional formal or semi-formal wedding in British and American, as well as Commonwealth, traditions. Brides in many other countries are adopting this traditional white dress. This term refers to the white colour of the wedding dress, which became popular in the Victorian era and came to symbolize purity of heart and the innocence of childhood. Later attribution suggested that the colour white symbolized virginity.

It is supposed to be to show purity, back in the day you got married and then had sex. These days I think that it is just a matter of tradition and it has been drilled into women that that is proper for a wedding. But these days it is moving further away from tradition and women are wearing more and more colors having less and less traditional weddings.

in a traditional sense it implies virginity, the veil symbolizes that no man has seen the females privates and when he kisses her he lifts the veil and thus she has shown him her special bits (symbolically speaking).
Because of our past sexist tradition where females were subject to male domination, this is a practise which is quite symbolic of that past sexism. why is there no such "ritual" for men? so it implies that its ok for guys to "sow their wild oats" while a woman who goes about with guys are $&^&**(()*, yup, you got it, all sorts of rude names. what names are their for such guys? nothing, he's just a bloke having a good time. oh well, i think u get the point.
I am merely highlighting these ideas, but i was a virgin till i was 29 (yes, through choice, thank u!) i think most people do not carry this tradition of the veil unless its purely for religion's sake or some people do it for the show.

They are supposed to be pure like the color white, if it's you second marraige you should wear an off white since you are not pure anymore..
Truth is most women lost the "purity" around 15 or 16.

Originally it was because white is a symbol of purity, therefore a bride could only wear white if she were still 'pure' ie a virgin. So it was used as a symbol of status of sorts.
However nowadays, most brides in white aren't exactly pure, its just the tradition of the thing...

it's all about the purity thing
http://www.fromtimespast.com/wedding.htm
this website is really interesting and tells you about the history of it
'Brides have always worn white, right? Not so. In ancient times brides wore bright colored wedding dresses to signify their joy. White for western brides didn't become fashionable until Queen Victoria wore it at her wedding to signify her status. White dresses never did signify purity until the Christian churches put that label on them. So feel free to add a little color to your wedding outfit.'

Its cultural. No all women wear white but in Europe and the US it became popular about a hundred years ago because someone famous did it and like anything else, everyone started emulating them. Its supposed to signify purity, but we all know better than that.

In normal circumstances, women dress in white to prove the marriage is a virgin one, that's means no sexual relationship has taken place between the couple. But today it seems to be a routine.
