Yet another case of PC gone mad, and the do-gooders jumping on the bandwagon telling us what we can and can't say.
I'm compelled to agree with one of the answers here but I fear that it's not going to be allowed to remain here for long because some bright bastard will report it. I've set my timer on it!

I know a pakistani guy who has a variation of PAK1 as his registration plate
I think the acceptability or offensiveness of words is a fashion that can change depending on the times, some pakistanis may be offended by paki and some may not, just like some women may be offended by the slang chick and some use the word themselves. Some are more sensitive than others.

Because 'Brit' is seldom used in a derogatory way. Sad to say, when most people use the term 'Paki' it is not just as a short-hand description for an inhabitant of Pakistan, but as a general derogative for Asian people.
You have to consider the baggage attached to words and phrases rather than their simple meaning. You could argue that 'nig*er' is just bad Latin for Black, but no one would seriously use the word without realising it's connotations.

Because the word 'Paki' is almost always used with in a derogatory context whereas 'Brit' isn't. It's the meaning behind the choice to use such words that make it racist - or not.

Because the word Paki has evolved in our culture as a derogatory term for Pakistani people. Brit has not.
Australians call the Pakistanis Pakis in their cricket commentry but they say it in the same way as people refer to us as Brits. It's not intended as an insult. It's all about our culture.
That is the sensible answer.

The British call themselves Brits. Pakistanians don't call themselves Paki's.
It's just like in school when your teacher calls role for the first time. If you prefer to be called by your full name, the teacher should respect that, if you have a nickname, that's fine too, but it is the decision of the person, not the teacher!

I like the sound of being called Brit or British, but under the pressure of culture shock and not knowing if your welcome it might have an edgy feel to it. I guess it's easy to imagine what years of racial abuse and name calling would do to anyone.
People have real names and it's alot more respectful to use them.
Do you think if we weren't so up you about defining
Britishness we could all be know as Brits.

It's all down to culture and context. If a group of people find something offensive it's offensive to do that thing. Same applies for someone from Nigeria. Brit is very unoffensive as it is a term that has no negative roots. Freedom of speech doesnt include deliberatly insulting people.

because when someone is called a paki a chink a Jew and so on.it is never said with affection or a good intent.and it's not something that they would call themselves. but as a british subject .we do call ourselves brits.the time to take offence is when as a british person .you are being called .limey (not sure of the spelling) or a pome (prisoner of mother england) or the great on wash .that's when as a british person you are being insulted. oh and the french calls us roast beef but we do call them frogs .i can go on and on but my point is we can give it out but we can't take it .one last thing i don't care about getting 10 points just wanted to get this off my chest .........
