This is a common problem with a lot of cars and can be worse depending on which part of the country you live in. What happens is mold and mildew start growing inside the evaporator case and after a while, it starts to stink. A deodorizer will cover the smell for a while, but unless you get rid of the mold and mildew, it will come right back.
What I use is Lysol. I put the heater controls in the recirculation position, turn the fan speed on medium and spray the Lysol into the intake under the passenger side dash. You may have to drop the lower dash cover to see the intake. I don't skimp on it. Give it a good long spray to be sure it gets inside the case. This will kill the mold and mildew and get rid of the smell. I also spray some into each of the outlet vents to get anything that might be growing inside the tubes..
Doing this once a year or so will keep that stuff from growing back. More often if you live in a high humidity area.

I make my own spray using natural oils from the drug store or health food
store. A little bottle makes tons of spray so don't worry about the price.
Tea tree oil and lavender make a wonderful airfreshener . I owned a
second hand store and used it all the time to take the stale odour out of
clothes and the air. Just be careful not to spray on leather or suede.
In one shot of alcohol (I use gin because I like the smell) put in several
drops of lavender and a couple drops of tea tree oil. Shake this together
first to dispurse the oils. Then add a bottle of bottled water and shake.
Pour into a spray bottle and use. It truly is economical, earth friendly and
good for your soul. The tea tree is an anti-fungal, antiseptic and the
lavender can invigorate or calm depending on how much you use. It
works.

Lysol is only one of a number of products available. However, it is only temporary. You will have to find the source of the mold and get rid of that entirely. Do look for it and get rid of it if you can. Molds can cause all kinds of illnesses.
