Wouldn't that depend on the person's personality, job, social situation etc.? It might even vary by socio-economic level or what country the man/woman live in. Even then it can vary greatly depending on the activity of the day. I haven't run across any studies on this, although there are some studies on how much parents speak to kids or spouses. Personally, I am a woman, and a teacher, so I would probably push the average for women up during the workweek, maybe 50,000 words or more, especially when I am teaching adults. However, if I am home alone reading or doing chores, hobbies etc. I may say less than 1000 words a day ( mostly to telemarketers who interrupt my solitude).

When I tried to find something on the net, I kept coming across non scientific sites such as the one below, which may or may not be funny to you:

A husband looking through the paper came upon a study that said women use more words than men.

Excited to prove to his wife that he had been right all along when he accused her of talking too much, he showed her the study results. It read "Men use about 15,000 words per day, but women use 30,000".

The wife thought for a while, then finally she said to her husband "It's because we have to repeat everything we say."

The husband said "What?" ( first site below)

The second site below has a discussion of your question, with various quotes;"A compilation of averages on a trivia page at corsinet.com says that 'On average women say 7,000 words per day. Men manage just over 2000.' "As the article points out, there are no identifiable studies. Where do these numbers come from?
So, good question. Maybe you could undertake a scientific study and establish your own range of numbers.

If you mean how many different words we use a day then it's about 1,500 with some words being said more often than others. I would agree with most of the other posts and say 20,000 for women and 7,000 for men and none of any interest or truthful by politicians

I would guess anything between 2000-10000.
Interesting question, for on some days we hardly speak at all, whilst on others, it seems we never stop.
