dimensions of original square = what is asked
decreased by 3 cm = function you need to use (-3)
now you can write the equasion, let x = the original square....x = (x-3)(x-3) I think

You need two equations here
Let's use s to stand for the original length of the side
The area oof the new square can now be written two ways
(s-3)^2
and
s^2 -81

Since these are equal you can set them equal to each other
(s-3)^2 = s^2 -81
now solve the equation for s
s^2 -6s +9 = s^2 - 81
-6s = -72
s = 12
So the original square was 12 x 12
