Because of the minus sign, everything inside the parentheses changes its sign when you are simplifying. You are really adding a negative parenthetical to the 9a.

9a - (8a - 5b)
9a + -(8a - 5b)
9a + (-8a + 5b)
9a - 8a + 5b
a + 5b

If the sign in front of the parentheses had been a plus sign, you would have kept the same +/- signs that were in the original parentheses.

Removing Parenthesis
First you multiply the negative sign with what is inside the bracket 9a -(8a-5b) = 9a - 8a + 5b
Simplifying
then you subtract the like terms, 9a - 8a then the answer is
a + 5b
