Turning a PC on & off all the time is bad for it. Heating up and cooling down repeatedly stresses the components and reduces the lifespan of the PC. I never turn my computers off at work, or at home, unless I know they won't be used for a week or more. I encourage my staff to leave theirs on also. You would probably spend more money on replacement parts than you save in electricity. And as for helping the environment, talk to me once G.W. Bush gets off his *** and signs The Kyoto Accord, then I'll worry about my PC usage. Leaving TV's on standby is a much bigger problem, BTW.

turning it on and off everytime you leave your desk is rather pointless as you can set the thing to hibernate after a preset time. However, leaving it on all night or over the weekend will waste a small amount of electricity, particularly if you still have a CRT.
If everyone left their machines on 24/7 then the accumulative effect is to use a considerable amount of power, and of course as much of our electric is generated by oil, coal and gas we are therefore harming the environment by using up our resources and producing CO2
One has to use a modicum of common sense with such an issue, and of course it applies to domestic appliances also, even when on standby

Workers who leave their computers on and unattended are a godsend for pranksters. These are a few of the classic moves:
1) Find an offensive picture on the internet, and set it as their desktop
2) Set their browser homepage to something offensive
3) Email the company with an embarrassing confession
4) Reset some of the default Windows sounds to offensive sounds taken from the internet.
If you like a prank, you will now see these people in an entirely different light.

So shall we switch off our computers when we go for a wee or leave our desk for a minute? Surely the power required to switch the thing back on is greater and therefore more damaging to the environment.
If you're going to be an eco warrier, do your research first.

What about people who sit at home all day on their pc's on sites like this one? They are also damaging the environment. Should they sit in a dark room with no stimulus whatsoever?

leaving your computer on does not damage the environment. if you are talking about the minimal power usage, look at Las Vegas and then tell me the tiny bit of power my PC uses when it isn't doing anything makes one bit of difference

quite right, when we go home we should all switch our computers off at the mains. can you imagine what a reduction that would be in terms of power consumption. not to mention the savings of companys would make. this should be an issue that all companys should address
edit = and to all the people who says what about so and so. regardless of what other people do you should do what you can. atleast then you have the right to ***** at them lol

I always turn mine off just like I never leave the tv on standby. I think that if I do little things to help like that, they will eventually add up to something significant

Most leave theirs own because that is how updates and backups happen at night. You should log off though so no one else can get on it.

I always turn mine off before going home. I take my time about it 'cos it means I stop working a bit earlier.
