My UPS has got a problem. It doesn't give back-up. After power goes,it just gives back-up of like 5 seconds and its impossible to shut down computer in that period. I am a bit busy these days. Till i get my UPS mended, I just wana know what problems can i face because of my computer very often switching off without shutting down. Sometimes i'm able to take my PC to stand-by mode before switching off. Is that any good?

frequently improper shut down may corrupt some files, or worst break your hard disk, since hard disk is using a head pointer and if power suddenly stops while the hard disk is writing something, the head will stop and may hit the disk, and break, but the possibility is rare.

it doesn't matter if you use ubuntu, or winxp, if the power was cut, the tendency is your PC without a UPS will shut down.

try using hibernate, it will save the current state of your computer and shut down your computer, and reload the state when you open your pc, to hybernate go to start menu, click shut down, and press the shift button on your keyboard, and the standby button will then change into hybernate

There are Pcs available which can handle this problem very well just like the one I am using right now. but if you dont have time to mend ur UPS u surely wont be having time to upgrade ur PC. Problem u can face is ur hard disk might crash. Though it's chances are less. But surely it will develop bad sectors. The FAT table might get corrupted or even the Laser eye might get damaged. So take a bit of time off and give your PC what it wants

actually there is absolutely no spaces between two disks in the hard disk. It is the nature of head of hard disk to go at zero sector. Since the disks are running at very high speed when the computer is on. so due to air pressure between each disks caused by the running status, all plates in a hard disk remains at a distance from each other. When electricity goes off and computer becomes off without shut down then the head of the hard disk scratches the disk from the current position to the zero sector as it wants to reach to the zero sector. Such action can harm your hard disk and it may be the cause of bad sector in your hard disk. It is also right that all unsaved files and datas will be lost in such case.

my UPS is also like that and completey useless. It does not cause many troubles but some unsaved documents might go away or the storage capacity of your computer can fall.
