here for the past few weeks ive had a toe infection that i couldnt heal on my own so i finally went to the doctors yesterday for antibiotics...they also told me it was caused by an ingrown toenail...they want to go in and lift up the nail and cut part of the root thats causing the problem...i was told that part of nail will never grow back and wont cause anymore pain...has anyone had this done, and if so did it work?

Yes I have had the surgery for ingrown toenails on both my big toes. I went into surgery thinking that they were only going to take both sides of the nail that curl around and that the main part of the toenail would be left......when I got home after the surgery and removed my bandages all I saw was a big hole....they decided to take the WHOLE nail (which never grew back)! My advice to you is that if or when you sign to agree to the surgery that you state firmly that ONLY THE SIDES be remove. If for any reason they don't get the entire root on the sides, you could get small bits of nail growing in. But all and all its worth it and yes you wont have anymore pain. Regular tripped for pedicures or a chiropodist is even better because they will show you how NOT to cut your nails and will put a small bit of cotton under the nail at the corners to start training your nail to grow up instead of growing down under the skin. I hope this helps and really research it b4 you opt for surgery....its a last resort. Good luck!! Dont forget that us women love shoes and open toed shoes aint so pretty without a nice painted TOENAIL!!

Yes it will work. I have had it done when I was a teenager. Now whenever I cut my toe nails I do not cut too low so I do not get any more ingrown toenails. another trick is when you first feel like it is hurting take your toe nail clippers and cut a little V-notch out in the middle of the toe nail. It will actually let the toenail have less stress growing in and pull the edge away from the side of your toe enough so it does not turn into an ingrown toenail.

My sister had this done a few years back on two of her toes. They were always getting infected so the doctor suggested surgery as you are describing. She was terrified and just kept letting it slide until she got another infection on her left toe.It was so badly infected that they wanted to amputate if the infection didn't clear.Thank God it cleared so she decided to get the originally proposed surgery on both toes and now she is fine. Now she experiences no pain-no infections and is glad she took the operation. So yes-it does work.Hope this helps.Have a good day!

Hey sassy...it is not that big of a deal...i had it done on my two big toes. They freeze the area with this spray before numbing it with the injection so you barely even feel the prick of the needle. Once they are done it wont look pretty for a week or two...but there is minimal discomfort afterwards and you never have to worry about it again. Good luck with the surgery :)
