That's the whole concept behind price and demand.
As long as people continue to pay the prices the jewelry merchants ask for their products they will inch upwards until they level off. If everyone stops or curtails their purchases, the prices will come back down to entice us to resume buying.
Ultimately, it's up to what a piece is worth to the selling individual and how bad the buyer wants it that determines whether the sale is completed or not.

I believe many wear it to accentuate status. What it symbolizes is a person's status and wealth. The rarity of the gem is not really one's desire unless they are really interested in collecting these items. Where do you see people buying jewellery for keepsake? People wear it, and flaunt it. I think however there is no price that could be placed on a gem that has caught the eye of a potential collector. If it is really that rare, he would place all he has just to get it because he sees a value in that item that others don't.

It really depends.
For one, let us put in mind the poor miners who labor all day in darkness just to be able to mine these precious gems. Many lives have been lost in trying to obtain these treasures of the earth.

Next, a genuine gem's quality is impossible to duplicate by man-made jewelry that it's rarity is worth paying for, for some people.

Finally, these gems are used as symbols of love (not always wealth), because as I said, it takes a lot of work to come up with genuine gems and it symbolizes that you are willing to toughen it out for the ones you love.

So I hope I enlightened you. Not all motives for possession of jewelries are all about wealth or power.

Difficult to say. Your enjoyment of a beautiful peace of jewelry is the important part of it's price, that you are willing to pay. The prices flactuate with the price of gold or other metals used. Diamonds keep their value, however still depend on the price one is willing to pay when you may try to sell them . Ever look at Estate jewelry for sale ?

I read an article in National Geo, about the Diamond mines in South Africa.I have never felt the same about Diamonds. Every time I see one I think of the child slave labor, in harvesting diamonds. There were babies born into camps at diamond mines they were made to harvest diamonds their entire lives, without even an identity. They slept in crude stalls, and died there. No price can be put on humanity!

Objects are only worth something if someone else wants them, or advertising tells them they want it.

If I had a diamond the size of my head, and no-one wanted it, it would be worthless.

If people keep paying ridiculous prices for things, then thats what the price tag will be.

I'd give anything for an Alexandrite gem. Not to show off wealth, but to admire the beauty of what nature created, anytime I want to look at it.

It is worth the price only to the person purchasing it.

Good luck trying to resell it for that same price back to a professional / expert.

The only thing it's worth to me is how much I can sell it for to buy something useful.
