Not really. America is really behind the curve in cellular technology, and we are really slow in adopting it.

But if you want to travel elsewhere around the world especially in Asia and Europe, having one that is 3G will save you from having to buy/rent a phone, you'll just need a sim card.

Currently, the only nationwide carriers that have such phones are Cingular and T-mobile. And those phones have to be unlocked before going abroad because carriers force locks on the phones.

Again, America's really behind.

Right now? No, Verizon is using its EVDO network to run with 3G. And the guy above it correct, America is really behind. But there is a reason for this. Its because we were ahead before. You have networks built already and service providers want to get all they can from what they have already without spending more and more to make money. Other countries without networks in the past are building theirs now, so of course they use the latest and greatest. China and Japan define technology so they are always moving.
Now, with that said. T Mobile is upgrading to 3G. Others have fast networks in the works or already. The reason its not so great at the moment is that the content is limited. Within a year or so, you talking true streaming media, videos on demand, video conf, music purchases but faster, actual purchases via your phone. I was in Japan last week and bought a Coke with my phone. Just pointed and pressed the button. Just an example and a small one but still, the world is opening up.
