If you have never been on a fast before, I suggest doing a juice fast for three days to begin with. Buy organic fruits and vegetables... juice them and only drink fresh juice for three days. If you don't have a juicer, you can find fresh, 100% juice at the store. But I would suggest buying a juicer because they aren't that expensive and are a great investment! :)
After a few days of that, slowly begin eating fruits and veggies again.
If you felt good about that, I suggest fasting for a week. Some people do water only fasts. You shouldn't do this if you have any medical conditions. You would also need to be sure that you are getting enough vitamins each day and supplement with fish oil to be sure you are getting the healthy fats your body needs.
Juice fasts seem to be the best for your body because it's a surge of vitamins and minerals that your body may not always get with regular western diets.
There are places online that describe different detoxes you can do along with fasting. Such as colon, liver, kidney, etc. If you are wanting to help your digestive tract, be sure to take probiotics during your cleanse. Flax and psyllium are also very helpful in sloughing off anything in your colon.
The first three days of the fast are killer. You feel hungry all of day two and three and I find myself getting irritable. By day four and five your energy level bounces back and my concentration improves. Day 5-10 seem to be really good.

I've fasted 3 or 4 times. The first time was with a church youth group and I don't remember having anything at all to eat or drink, and the fast was for 24 hours. Then we went and had lots of pizza. Food has been different to me ever since that first fast of only 24 hours. Prior to that I'd always had at least 2 meals every day, if not 3, probably, always had the food I needed. The second one was as an experiment, and the result was that I gave up eating meat; I didn't have anything to eat or drink for 2 days I dont think. I did stay in bed for a good portion of the time reading though. I didnt really do anything in particular, but after giving up meat I think I began to perceive in a more spiritual way. The last time or two I fasted it was for a day I think I'm not sure, but that time I got so much energy from fasting, it was amazing. I have since had times when I just didnt feel like eating, but if you havent already never start smoking because I think it affected by ability to fast
If you've never fasted before I wouldnt recommend longer than 24 hours-it was near excruciating! Otherwise I wouldnt do anything in particular other than try to be kind of sedentary during it. If you ever try longer fasts, I've heard water, tea, or juice can be good but my experience is this just makes me want to eat; it's better I think to consume nothing if possible
Now I remember I think I made use of a water fountain during the first fast

First, ask yourself WHY? If it's for losing weight, live it alone and get some nice moderate diet.
Fasting is good to clean the body of some poisons, and refreshing it. You can search for some short term diets for cleaning your system with actually eating food that will help.
If you want to fast after all and If it's the first time or one of the first times, be sure not to get radical.
first good experience will be go do a one day fast while drinking is allowed. dehydration is the most common danger. Herbal teas, clear water will do wanders, and help "wash" the system.
If you fast during your daily activities, be very sensitive to your body and eat some fruit, or a piece of bread when you feel sick or a little headache.
As fasting is method of self redemption in many religions, the secular idea will be "feeling good" and not trying to compete with anybody, especially yourself. Remember: FEELING GOOD!
As you can stretch fasting to longer periods, finding your way is the best, a day (24 hr) once in 2 weeks might be good (with fluids!)
back to the beginning, ask yourself why, consult more, read more, and take care. Hope you are not trying to be super model, in that case forget all I've just said and keep on eating ;-)

The best Fast is from Friday Night till Sunday night (ONLY do this once every other Month-And only with Your Doctors permission if you are on medication)
All you drink is Still Mineral Water and eat White Grapes!(As Much as You want)
Depending on How processed your Diet is will depend on the type of Cold Turkey you will go through!
A head ache is sometimes common, but doesn't hurt!, and maybe some Nausea(But again Nothing serious!)
It's well worth it and the Body Is Cleansed!
When you return to your Normal diet try and keep your food Intake Simple and Fresh!(i.e. Fruit and Vegetables)

I get it, why don't you try fasting once a week? I fast usualy on my day off that way I save some money and cleanse myself of all the coffee and smoking I do. I even stay away from smoking. I think it is the safest way to do that.

Being able to fast for a long period of time depends on your body make up, health, and ability. You make sure you drink plenty of water so as not to dehydrate. Try four days first and then keep adding days and you will attain your limitation.

You can eliminate everything but water. If you have never tried it before, aim for 3 days for your first time. I know people who periodically fast for 21 days.
