How do you know the money will be spent on drink or drugs. You my friend need to research into homelessness and the reason for it.It is not all about drink and drugs, it is about their life circumstances and possible abuse ,trauma and rejection in their formative years. They are not as privilaged as you and I. Word of advice in a productive sense, "please dont look down on these people, give them all the help you can, you probably have'nt got a clue what they have been through. Whilst we were all tucked up at night, half of these people as children have gone through hell, which the likes of you and me could not even comprehend. Please dont blame them, most of them are victims of circumstances.( In other words innocent kids). Do your good deed,Throw them a pound.

I think its because, there are a few beggers who genuinely need the help, but its impossible to tell who. Some people buy them sandwiches instead. Probably best not to judge people in these situations, we have no idea what these people have run away from. Maybe if you had lived their lives, you might have turned to drink or drugs to eliminate the pain in the only way they know how.

because some people don't think that when they give them money. they just feel sorry for them and give them the money i don't really think they think about what these beggers may go and do with it. It makes them feel better to just give money. Besides do all beggers go and drink and do drugs?

I dont think that's fair - not everyone on the street is on drink and drugs. Some people have had very unfortunate lives and thats where they have ended up. Lets be honest...our government is hell bent on making sure every immigrant that arrives in the country is housed, fed and watered - they havent got time for us!
Anyway.....if you've got a roof over your head and a few spare pennies in your pocket, then do the right thing!

I think I also give money to beggers but I won't side with you because we give to help the achieve their needy areas eg; food, clothing etc. We also know out of our christianity that giving will bring blessings from God our way. Giving does not allow one to follow up and get to know how whatever given has been utilised.
so we give for good things in our mind to help the situation that have blinked our eyes due to sympathy and held the person get out of the bad situation that he/she is in.

Thats not always the case, we have a few homeless here in Weymouth and yes its true the majority are on drink, drugs or both, BUT there are 2 here 1 female & 1 male that do not drink & do not take drugs, they are what we call traditional street people here in Weymouth and YES a lot of us give them change when we see them, BUT there is one very big difference with them two...THEY NEVER EVER ASK

All humans are ultimately selfish. If we do a good deed it may be because it makes us feel good. When we make the choice to help or give to another human there is always a selfish reason behind it. ALL SELFISHNESS IS NOT BAD.
Some of us help or give to others as I said above because it gives them a good feeling...THEY are the lucky people ...to give to others is giving to themselves.
Some humans never give not of material things or of themselves they are the UNlucky ones and they are always.... no matter how many people they may be around......alone.
Is it good to give to a beggar ...when it will go to drink or drugs? What does it matter? When you give anything away ....It is not yours any longer ...nor is it any of your business where it goes.... because it then belongs to someone else. It is hard at times to keep that in mind ...but that's just the way it is.

I think people hand them a little money because it is the easiest way to feel like they have helped them, for the least amount of inconvenience to themselves.
If you really want to help some of them, offer to give them some clothing, or buy them a meal from McDonald's, most homeless will never take you up on this. If not, then of course, they are looking to get drunk and high. Giving most of these unfortunate people money DOES NOT help them, rather it keeps them where they're at.
