Look into Swidden Agriculture (slash&burn agriculture). You will see that deforestation causes the soil to deteriorate in quality, thereby causing more deforestation. Then when rains do come the ground cannot soak up the water and there are flash floods. Since the ground does not soak up the water there is not reserve water during dry periods--hence drought.
