I think Jack Straw wanted them to show their faces, not their genitals. Therefore I'm not sure that you are making any point of merit here, which is a shame as this could have been an interesting, though polemic, discussion.

I happen to agree with Shirley P. I am in no way a racist person and I would love for this whole country and the world to be able to accept each other and get on as one. The fact remains that we constantly have to adhere to and respect other people's wishes from other countries and religions, but often at the sacrifice of our own.

I don't have a problem with Jack Straw making this particular request but those who do should seriously consider going back to a society where it is 'the norm' because it is not traditional British practice.

I feel this applies to all things not just clothing. I saw a news report the other day about a town being furious at a mosque being built in their midst and again I agree. We do not simply waltz into anywhere else and start demanding churches of England be built so why should it be any different here?

jack straw isnt insisting its removed, its simply polite to remove a face covering of any sort when engaging in conversation. Whether its a veil, a crash helmet or a scarf wrapped round the face.

He was only suggesting it might be beneficial to community relations, to be able to speak to the person face to face as opposed to face to veil.

I wouldnt want to talk to someone in-depth while they were wearing a crash helmet, so whats the difference.

We as a country have bent over backwards to integrate different religions and cultures, and all we get in return is them moaning like spoilt kids that cant have their own way.

Maybe thats the way things are done in foreign countries and different cultures, but its not done that way here.

The muslims are causing more and more problems for themselves. If they continue to complain about unfair treatment or racial issues all the time, its no wonder so many people have very poor views of them. They are bringing it on themselves.

If our government stopped other religions from having places of worship etc, I could understand there being an uproar, but they havent. They have allowed all religions to practice as they see fit.

Do we see sikhs or jews or any other religions causing this much strife? No, they just get on with their lives and dont cry like babies every time they cant have things exactly as they want.

My four year old has a better understanding of compromise and human relationships than some of these people.

Imagine being in hospital - ill or in pain, and the doctor that treats you is garbed from head to toe in black and you can't even see her face because there's a veil accross it! All you can see is her eyes (and not much of them!)

I'd hate it! I'd demand another doctor! In cases such as this, facial expressions, such as a smile perhaps, are reassuring and put people at ease, they help the speaker convey reassurance or compassion, which in some cases is very nuch necesary to put the listener at their ease and prevent misunderstandings.

He's not asking then to show their legs or their breasts or any other initimate part of their body. For God's sake whats so "immodest" about showing your FACE to another person???

In this instance Jack Straw is right.

For a Moslem woman to speak from behind a veil is an insult to the person she is speaking to.

In recent years we [Anglo-Saxons & Scots] have been required to remove baseball caps - hoodies - and other similar garments before entering stores and shopping centres. Therefore, it is reasonable for them top remove their veils and burkas.

Anyway there exist some nice looking Moslem girls, lets hacve a look at them.

I agree with Jack Straw. Why should anybody be allowed to cover there face. My husband and son are both ride motorbike's when going into shop's, shopping centre'e banks etc., they must remove their crash helmet's , incase they're going to rob someone. Grandma's wearing hood's in wet weather have been asked to leave shopping centre's, because they're classed with yobs called hoodies. So why should one group of people be allowed to cover their face, like female suicide bombers do.

His point should be taken seriously. I dont normally listen too much to politics but I am fed up with this country being turned into an extension of the middle east. We are Brits. We even welcome people into our country who wish to be Brits. This burning of the Koran, tantrums over being asked to remove veils is getting a bit much. I would not expect to be allowed to strut my stuff in a bikini in front of a government figure in Saudi. I expect the same respect in my own country when it comes down to our own countries requirements. I am sick and tired of muslims throwing stroppies every time we open our mouths to say something they dont like. This is a country of free speech and I'm proud of it and if people dont like it then they should go back to their country of origin.

P.S. I dont want to see Straw with his trousers off thankyou!

Oh grow up. For once I actually agree with something that a member of this government has said. It's good manners. Why should we have to put up with all their stupid ways. They're in the UK now, if they don't like what we stand for, go back home!!!

Take it you dont aggree with what he said?. he only made a request not a demand and to be honest if you go over there to their country you are requested to take off your shoes and cover your legs when you visit a mosque. we are in England and they should be respectfull to us in return. they look very intimidating all covered up to be honest especially in light of recent activities. unfortunatly now days we do tar everyone with the same brush.

hats of to straw, he had to start it, because no one else was going to. He actually means the national security of hiding peoples faces, how on earth do you know who is under the veil?
