Atlantis itself never existed, just like Thomas More's Utopia, or Shangri-La. It is the setting for an ideal society, an imagined location to set the story. This form of writing is still used today, eg. the films Zardoz, The Time Machine, Logans Run.
However, the Greeks were more than aware that circa 1100BC there existed a civilisation, far more outstanding than any other at the time. It features in the Hittite Library, and was the first civilisation to invent writing (Linear A, as we now refer to it), had trade links with the principle Greek trading cities (at this time the Greeks were not a single race, but a group of city states, eg Troy, Sparta, Athens etc), and was the envy of the world. It was the Minoan civilisation (see such Greek epics as The Minotaur, Daedalus & Icarus). Sometime around the turn of the first millenium BC a volcano erupted off the Greek/Turkish coast, which unleashed a tidal wave of vast proportions which swept over the whole of Crete (the Minoan island), destroying the whole civilisation. The Greeks later recolonised the island, and thanks to archaeological excavations we can still see the remnants of the Minoans. There really is a labyrinthine set of caves beneath the island, though fortunately no giant half man half bull creature.
That Atlantis is based on the concept that a civilisation can disappear under the sea would have been something the 7th Century BC Greeks could relate to, though had this been real, it would have been called Minos not Atlantis.
I am sure you will easily be able to find out more by visitting the Greek Tourist Boards website and looking up Crete/Minoans.
Turkey in particular is still hit frequently by earthquakes, and it was probably these events that led the Greeks to believe Poseidon was not only god of the seas, but also earthquakes.

The Biblical flood, underground cities, great convulsions that have affected the earth, earthquakes, volcanoes, ice ages, technical artefacts from long ago--we find reports of things like these in numerous oral and written traditions.

Just think that humans have existed for around 2 million years, they tell us, but our current civilizations have existed for less than 10,000 years. What happened during the previous 1 million, 990,000 years? Little by little we're finding out, but it's hard to find evidence that may have been covered over by mud and volcanic ash, not to mention the deep ocean.

Atlantis is one of the "stories" we have. All we know is what Plato told us. His stories give us leads we can follow in an investigation into whether or not suh a city did exist--but leads are not facts. He said, she said, they said...Not good enough. The likelihood that Atlantis existed is high, but not as high as other things we don't now know about. We've known about dinosaurs only for less than 200 years. Before archeologists discovered the bones of these "terrible lizards" (that's what dinosaur means), no one had any idea. Just last week, they found the remains of one the size of a city bus (that's huge). As we keep following the leads we have, maybe we'll find Atlantis. That there is a high probability that there may have been many previous civilizations before our own is obvious, but we only have a few titbits of the facts. When I was a child, I was sure I'd live long enough to see a creature from some other planetary system; now, I know it probably won't happen in my lifetime, but maybe it will in yours. Maybe the same for Atlantis.

This has been sorely misinterpreted. The sinking of Atlantis into the sea is the process of it becoming an underworld, or hidden place. Atlantis, Poseidons realm, now like Hades, is subject to the rule of higher kingdoms, like that of Zeus. Porphery says 'Zeus is the world and all within it'. The earth as we know is the kingdom of Zeus. The geographical position of Atlantis in the west, has been strongly likened to 'the lands of the west'; the place where the egyptians believed their souls went after death. So I only believe in it as a spiritual place where Poseidon recieves his share of the human mass of souls.

Yes I do, all legends have a basis in fact however small it may be it is there. If they find Atlantis it will be interesting to see what they find. I would like to know about there architecture, and drainage systems mainly to see how far advanced (for their time) they actually were compared to other civilization in that particular region of the world.

No, I don't.
I'm not sure how many of those who do are ware of the fact that for some 2500 years, the only reference to it is in one of Plato's dialogues, where Atlantis is mentioned as an example of ideal society. It is an allegory, not a historical narration. Needless to say, those who study Plato take it in the first sense and not in the latter.

I believe that the story of Arlantis actually represents the loss of many coastal settlements at the end of the ice age when sea levels rose. I also think this event is where we get all the stories about the great flood from (Noah's arc and so on).
I think many early towns and cities were lost under the seas in thei event.

The secret word of trading success is "organized". You can't be successful without a strategy, a plan and some kind of technological support. I use a software called "autobinary signals" that is helping me a lot. There are plenty of them on the market. I recommend this one because it's very easy to use (you don't have to be an expert or have special skills to make money with it).

Check it out here. It's worth it: http://tradingsignal.toptips.org

There are many likely locations, the latest is described in the link below. The literal story is likely a myth/fictionalization by Plato of a combination of a few important real places and events.
