While this could be something nefarious, it's probably nothing. If you're on a dial-up internet account, Remote Access is the service that allows your modem to connect to the internet. The full name of the service is Routing and Remote Access.

Many DSL broadband services also use Remote Access to establish your connection to the internet. If you have DSL and your provider send you a CD of software to install on your computer and if you have to manually establish your internet connection this is entirely normal.

You can check your system for any oddball connections. Go into Control Panel and open Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab. There should be one or more entries in the 'Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings' box. Post a list of those, or e-mail it to me off the forum, and I'll have a look at it for you.

Most likely there is nothing funny going on. For peace of mind, just enable the Windows Firewall on your system, assuming your running Windows XP. It's in the Control Panel as well. Turn it on, and make sure the 'Don't allow exceptions' box is checked.
