My mum had me do this every Sunday morning for all of her brasses! We used lemons, we used Brasso, we used brown sauce - got into a right mess and stank the place up!!! no to say our fingers got very sore from the chemicals and vinegar! Then an old dear told my mum the best way was to 'smoke' the brass - no I don't mean stick it your mouth and light it (!!!) - she said to light a candle and let the flame blacken the brass in sections - then using a soft duster - rub well. She was right - nothing else we used gave such a gleam.
(I should also add that as I got older I got fed up with this too, so I bought some clear polyurethane and once cleaned, coated all the brasses with this - have never had to clean them again since!!!- Lovely!!!)

I would use a proprietary brass cleaner like Brasso as suggested. Once cleaned it is worth thinking about applying a coat of clear lacquer which will stop it tarnishing.

You can also try sprinkling on a bit of salt and then rubbing with the cut end of a half lemon.

Rub toothpaste into it, with a toothbrush (to get into all the nooks and crannys) then rub off with a soft cloth.
