Royse City Texas. A hispanic man is suing the city for 1 million for not training officers to speak spanish. The gentlemen in question claims he was assaulted by a police officer at a football game in 2004. He claims that if the officer had spoken spanish the incident could have been avoided. No one is talking about the specific details of what happened so for our purposes the conduct of the officer and whether an assault actually occured is not at issue. It should be mentioned though that the officer is not named in the suit, only the city. Further, the man appears to be a legal resident so immigration is also not an issue in this case.
If as the man states this was the result of a failure to communicate, then if he had spoken english the situation could also have been avoided, but as has become the norm in this country, I shouldn't have to change, society should change to accomodate me.
What say you?

My step grandfather came to the US from Spain in 1966 and never learned English. My grandmother translated everything for him but she died in 1983 so we had to put up with his Spanglish for 16 years without my grandmother...I think he knew about 10 words in English. It was very irritating to be near him. I think it is rude to expect people to conform because you're too lazy to learn the language of the country you reside in...and especially if you're going to need to be arrested at a football game.

Unfortunately a bill to make English the "official" language has been shot down two times now. With this in mind, how can you tell someone they are required to learn English or Spanish. Quite frankly, Texas was a spanish speaking territory at one time. The suit is frivilous and won't go anywhere. The issue will still remain. If we don't set up a guideline on what language this country will use, well, who knows what may happen.

This is the perfect reason as to why we need to seal off the boarders. Do you think that if the roles were reversed in another country there would even be a lawsuit. The English speaking person who got assaulted would be kicked out of their country for not speaking Spanish and provoking the Spanish speaking police officer. This sort of thing just pisses me off. We should pack his bags and send his *** back where he came from. Speak English or get the f*ck out.

The people that were born in this country should not be forced to learn another language because some are too stupid/lazy/arrogant to learn English. Don't bother arguing some have no time to learn - if the man had time to go to a football game, he had time to learn. Plus, somehow, people from countries that speak every other language but Spanish manage to learn. If they can, so can the Hispanic people.

Its a shame these people can't see what fools they are making of themselves by filing such law suits.
English is the most spoken languae in the world and if this person was really so high and mighty he'd bother to better himself by learning English and then not getting into these sorts of scrapes.

I say everyone has to speak English! That's ridiculous! Let me say that we should know more that just English though, I mean other countries teach languages other than their own and we could benefit from that.

This is one of many reasons we need to make english the national language, yes. All early immigrants had to learn the common language, it unites a country rather than dividing it.

General rule of thumb, the world over is "When in Rome do as the Romans do"
you can not go to any other country in the world and expect them to speak your language, you have to learn theirs!
