You didn't give much information about your MIL, so it's hard to say. I don't have a clue what elderly English ladies are like, so I can only tell you what my 80 something American MIL likes (or at least what she gets from us--don't have a clue if she likes it).

She likes those gift sets of perfume that have the scent, as well as lotion and maybe powder. She likes the more old fashioned scents, like "White Shoulders". She likes them as she doesn't have the money to buy them for herself, and my FIL never thinks about feminine things like that.

I have bought her earrings or another piece of jewelry to go with a specific outfit of hers, or in a color that coordinates with things she wears often. You can often (over here in the US, anyway) get a quite nice piece of jewelry (obviously not diamonds or anything like that) for between $50-$75, which, according to the currency converter I just looked at, is within your budget range. I know you can find a nice pair of gold earrings in that range.

She likes things to do with her interests, the main one of which is baking. She makes apple pies for everyone, as her recipe is very good, and I have, in the past, bought her a very nice set of pie tins along with oven mitts, dish towels, etc.

My friend's grandmother is also in her 70s, but she's a fierce, modern, active woman. She likes things like movies and music, and especially books. She's quite unusual though--several years ago she asked for and received a Tarot deck and several workbooks to learn how to use it. I don't know if your MIL is that type of woman, or a bit more conventional.

If all else fails, I will tell you my boring but effective last minute gift. A nice set of photo frames, all coordinated, and which match with the decor of the person's home. Often, I have special pictures to put in them already, like the time I gave my MIL a double frame with a black and white photo of me as a toddler in one side, and a black and white photo of my husband at the same age in the other. Other times, I don't have photos to fill them, so I give the frames first, with a little note saying the photos are on the way, and then I drag my husband out either to a photo studio, or outdoors with a friend who can take decent pictures, and we get enough shots to fill the frames.

I know those aren't terrific ideas, but I find that my parents and my husband's parents are the most difficult people in the world to shop for. For some reason, they don't want anything, and because they are older, they have at least one of just about everything already. I always just keep my fingers crossed that they will appreciate the thought, and they always do, and I am sure your MIL will, as well.

I wish you happy and productive shopping!

I recently bought a gift for my Mother in Law- I got her a massive scented candle sitting on a white stylish plate topped with a white rose & ribbon- it was really presentable and only cost E12.00 (but im sure would be less if u were willing to put it together yourself)- I put it into a gift bag just to add more appeal. Good Luck with your shop.

Get her a crystal glasses holder/chain. They work out to be around £10 -£30 including postage from HK.

Why not take her out for a really nice lunch or dinner somewhere fancy? Maybe a magazine subscription or something too?
