I work in a motel....I am at work right now...
Last night...I was supposed to be here at 11p, but was 4 min's late....due to traffic....I left my house in plenty of time, but it is a Thurs night in a College Town.
Anyway, I am usually here at 20 min's until 11p, but when I wasnt here, at 11:01p, the person I was relieving, called my house looking for me. My Mom answered the phone & was asked "Where's Lena at?"....no hello or nothing....
When I walked in...the girl told me to call my house, since she has freaked my Mother out....& was laughing about it.
I just got through telling my Boss, who always comes in at 5a, about the call.....she told me that there was nothing wrong in that.
The girl did right. Also, she does not think it was rude for the girl to just come out & ask where I am without addressing my Mother or explaining who she is.
I have asked EVERYONE to not call my house after 10p, since I have kids that go to bed early during the wk. for school. This call woke them

my question is......
Was she right in doing this?....I feel maybe if I was like 10 min's late...yes, but not 1 min.
Also, I feel it should have been my boss that calls....NOT the person I am relieving.
Who is correct in this?
Like I said...I am usually 20 min's early....this is the first time in 2 mo's that I have been late.....

While I think it was absurdly rude and unnecessary - I guess in the rules of a company - they have the right to call if you are late. It would depend on the company you work for. I work at a hotel and my relief is always at least 5 minutes late. Whereas, I am always 15 minutes early. But I don't call any of them at home or on their cell phones. I just kinda wait and hope they show up. I think the suggestion of getting a cell phone might be an answer. Or have your mom take the phone off the hook. That's what my husband does. After 10pm, he takes the phone off the hook. Then all they get is our voice mail.

I'm not going to say she's wrong about calling, but she should have given you more time and been more considerate of your mother and explained things.
A lot of people want to go home when it's time to go and are impatient. I'm the same way. I've done my 8 and it's time to go. Though I'd have given you half an hour thinking that traffic could be holding you up, or maybe you had a flat tire.
Some one suggested a cell phone and I have to agree with it. If you want to avoid future calls to your house and waking the kids, then you should get one and when you're gonna be a little late, you should call and let them know.

Because you are reliable showing up for work 20 minutes early, understand to be 20 minutes late may cause alarm to those you work with. I would let go of trying to be right about how the call should have been handled. Personally it was lacking manners, but what happened, happened. Best way to prevent this going forward would be to continue to be the dependable employee you are and when you are not going to arrive at work 20 minutes early call work and let them know what time they can expect you. The result? No heightened sense of urgency is created and most important no phone call to your home is made.

No, I do not think that your co-worker should have made that call. Your boss should have been the one to get in contact with you to find out what was going on. Your co-worker should have been more considerate and patient and gave your some more time to make it to work. There are many factors that make people a few minutes late. Flat tire, traffic, weather.......
Most employers have procedures that are to be followed in these situations. Check with your boss to find out company policy that applies to this case and ask that it be followed the next time that you are 1 minute late.

Hey, the woman was wrong for calling your house. A supervisor should always be the one calling for any reason. Something similar happened to me. A coworker that I didn't even like and who didn't have my phone number called my house while I was out sick on a supervisor's cell phone. I don't care what anyone says it wrong. It's wrong if the woman was nice when she spoke to your mother and it's wrong if she wasn't. Not to mention, she probably alarmed your mother to no ends. Put that woman in her place and you might want to seek other employment. All of those people sound crazy to me.

No, she was WRONG, impatient and Insensitive. Call her an hour before she is supposed to come to work and ask her if she'll be on time....do this every day for a week. Maybe she will get the message.

Your right, your boss is wrong. There's no excuse for your co-worker to be rude over the phone. I don't think the boss would want that same attitude directed toward the guests.

It is wrong to be rude, but it is also wrong to be late.
Whether it is 1 minute or 1 hour, it is still 'late'.
Be punctual next time.

get a cell phone so they can call you directly. THe girl was definitely lacking in sensibility for the way she upset your mother, but so far we can't legislate sensibility.
