I have also had this problem and it was related to security permissions deep down in the operating system.

First make sure the Plug and Play services are running as described in another post. If that doesn't solve the problem, it may be a security related issue. The following may help, but involves editing the registry. Please be aware of the risks of editing the registry before embarking on this. I take no responsibility if it doesn't work!!

1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedt32"
2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
3. Scroll down to "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum"
4. With "Enum" selected click the "Security", "Permissions" menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on
this key.

5. Click "Add".
6. Add the group "Everyone" and the user "SYSTEM".
7. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
8. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
9. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
10. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..."
11. Click "OK"
12. On the warning window click "Yes"
13. Close REGEDT32

Assuming you have ran virus/spyware scans (always do that as first step)

open control panel and double click on add/remove programs/software. Look for a program named contextplus and click on it and then change remove(uninstall) and reboot. Check device manager and make sure your devices are listed. If that fails try these steps

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Plug and Play.

If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK.
3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK.
4. Close Services.
5. Restart the computer.

I hope I have been of some help

need more information such as version of windows you are running and have you tried starting it in safe mode?

if you are running 98 at boot time hold down the f8 key once you have the boot menu choose command prompt only at the c:>\ prompt type scanreg
and click enter and view backup copy's and restore a previously good registry. If you are running xp at boot time hold down the f8 key at boot menu choose to boot to the last known good configuration and enter and the problem should be solved .
