I have noticed that it is not biased at all in the information it provides - it just seems like quite an extraordinary achievement if it has been put together by an ecclectic group of contributers.......is there like a "governing Wikipedia body" (for want of a better phrase) that spot checks for accuracy?

Or if one contributor posts something that another believes to be wrong, can that person simply wipe it and insert what he/she believes to be correct?

Good question, Becky! It also contains your answer, doesn't it?

Fact is, we've got to take it on its face value. Most information is correct, to some extent. And most information has a leaning in it somewhere.

The information from wikipedia is not usually correct. That is why our school teacher advice us to do more research too from other websites to ensure the information provided by wikipedia is correct. If you realise, there is an edit button on the side of the wikipedia website which means that the information can be edited.

In this world there is no such thing as perfectly accurate information, but because wiki is set up by many people you can be assured that it is one of the most accurate sites on line.
It is edited several times, and never seems to be biased or choose sides on a topic, it will simply give neutral facts, eg wiki wont say Hitler was bad or good, simply that many people feel that he was bad or good. That leaves you as the reader to decide what you're opinion is.

Check other sites if you want to verify that wikipedia is correct. When I was learning how to conduct research on the web, my instructor told us not to believe everything we read. Go to the library and use reference books there to verify website has correct information.
