Back before "color" monitors, screens used to be monochrome - either green or amber.
Images left on screens would eventually cause "burn in" and leave ghost images on the screen. This is still seen on some ATM machines. Screen savers were written to keep an image moving on screens to prevent the phosphor burn in.
In more recent times, screen savers are used more or less for privacy -

Screen Savers original purpose is to protect your monitor from leaving an impression of the image of an application when you leave your computer to a particular application for too long over a period of time at the same time supposed to lower power consumption.

if you have the screen on and no screen saver after a number of hours you will get a screen burn which will not go away for a looong time

because if your screen keeps on having the same background, pretty soon, there will be marks on the screen left by the pictures... i think they call it "screen burning" but im not sure.... so screen savers are there, well, to save the screens...

screen savers used to be used to stop stationary images leaving an imprint on the tube but with modern monitors i think you will find they are now only decorative.

I heard that if you leave it on long enough, it puts a permanent impression on the screen.

acctually if u keep ur sys idle...ur sys runs the screen savers it will give some look to ur sys... just lik wallpapers
