You will probably hurt his feelings no matter what.
However, the best way is probably to start your statement with, "I'm sorry, but ...". The "sorry" bit takes the sting off a little because it lets the other person know that you realize that he has feelings, and that you are not just trying to be rude.

You can word it any way you want, he's still going to get his feelings hurt because any comment resembling rejection is going to make him feel bad. He can either take it like a man or get pissy about it which they sometimes do. All you can really do is be gentle but honest.

Personally, I would prefer a lady to tell it to my face. I'd also like her to tell me as soon as she has found someone else and not let me be the last to know.
Also, meet him alone, nowhere near your current boyfriend; keep the talk crisp, truthful and not cryptic. Avoid movie script clichés; and keep your current boyfriend’s name out of the conversation!
Who knows, he might respect you for your truthfulness. Men like a non-cryptic approach - at least I do. Think about it – a bad goodbye is not something you want to live with!

His feelings will be hurt regardless. The main thing is that you tell him, don't just disappear and not return phone calls. It doesn't need to be face-to-face, he just needs to know it's over.

I'd say just tell him the truth. Say something like, "you're just not my type. Sorry if I gave you the wrong idea." It's better to tell him now and that he hear it from you and not someone else.
