I'm a muslim woman (I converted to marry a Muslim man but am not religious in any way) and I hate the fact that women feel they must cover themselves to avoid arousing men! It seems to me that it's a hangover from the days when women were sold off as child brides, were treated like chattles to be disposed of and had little say in their own destiny. It might have been acceptable 1500 years ago in the desert but I think it's outrageous in the 21st century.

I wonder why they think it's necessary? I can understand that they want to be modest, that's fine, but most office workers in this country dress in a modest way!

To me it's another MAN made convention to control women. It's the men who have the problem, so maybe they should wear a blindfold to avoid being aroused, rather than expect their women to cover themselves from head to foot. Religions must adapt to the age in which they are being practiced and cultural conventions must not jsut persist because 'we've always done it this way', If the majority of people in this country thought like that, we'd still be sending little boys up chimneys and refusing to let catholics have a vote.

Muslim women, cast off your oppression!

The veil was invented by muslim men to make sure that no eyes fall on their beautiful or ugly wives.

Can you imagine what the mans friends would say if he had an ugly wife and without the veil. Or how many men would be after his wife when he goes on Jehad.

In many countries wearing Hijab or veil is voluntary and not forced upon like Iran, but even then they have to due to pressure from husbands, Mullas etc.

Can you imagine a veiled woman driving a car at night and you happen to see that, I bet you will run a mile thinking that its a ghost driving.

If a veil is worn, how do they get passports or even travel, since they are not allowed to show their faces to another man.

My reply to Roxy is if you're not Muslim, why did you convert just to marry a Muslim man? Why did you say you believed something you didn't?

To answer the posters question, there is nothing wrong with the veils. First off, there are various degrees. Most common is the hijab, that covers the head, but leaves the face visible. The religion believes that woman should be modest. Tradition usually has the women covering their heads arms to show modesty. While required in Iran, this is not an absoulte requirement. Many Muslims in the US, including many black Muslims, choose not to wear anything covering their heads. Women can show modesty in any way.

It's unfair to call other people's religious practices stupid. Women sometimes do have a choice in the matter of what they wear, and Islam can make for a traditional culture. It's not fair to make fun of something we don't understand.

The only objection I take to the hijab is that countries like Iran FORCE women to wear them. Women should be allowed to do whatever they want, including wearing what they want and being as immodest as they want.

I think this veil business has been blown out of all proportion,we have no dress code/law in this country,so let people wear what they want to wear, for religious purposes or not-it is,after all,a free country is it not?.Ashok kumar raises an interesting point though-pictures for such things as passports, driving licences,etc,etc-these women MUST have removed the veil for these things-otherwise it is impossible to get a passport,or driving licence. All in all though, its the case of another government minister putting his foot in it again-time to sort the government out,not the comman peoples of this land.

Very complicated to tell in the event that they're extremely women human beings! Natures present to womankind is the potential to entice the Male. The silken tresses and peach like epidermis are basically 2 of their attractions. In a veil ???

Don't forget the political angle. Jack Straw is a very clever politician. This is a calculated attempt at raising his profile so as to improve his chances of replacing John Prescott as Deputy Prime Minister.

an outdated practice carried out by stupid women who fall for it who do not realise that by doing it they are actually being used as good and chattels by the pig ignorant men who have no respect for them... and have to keep a woman hidden from other men as they think it will lead to mass adultery if we see the actual goats hidden underneath these things... fat chance...

It is an atrocity and disservice done to women by the terrorist men from the mid-east and hopefully we won't put up with the brain-washed idiots doing it for attention over here!

It's making them second class citizens just because Muslim men have no self control, they have to keep hidden.
