Can anyone work out the sum of this puzzle??

Question

Add the numbers:

Nineteen minus five =

4 + 3 x 2 =

6 - 5 =

Answer = 2106

I saw this puzzle on the mint on ITV1 last tuesday night (03 oct)
and they got the answer 2106, which turned out to be right, how can you get that high number from these numbers?

Answer 1

a) 19 - 5 = 14

b) 6 - 5 = 1

c) a - b = 14-1 = 13

d) 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 = 162 ( 4 number 3 x 2 !!)

c) 13 x 162 = 2106

I understand the official answer was calculated like this.

19 + 5 + 14 (ie 19-5) =38

Treating the individual letters as roman numerals gives

1 (i) + 1000 (m) + 1 + 1 + 5 (v) = 1008

Now taking letter pairs,

1001 (mi) + 4 (iv) = 1005

They ignored the NINE but took the letters NET (ten backwards) so 10 was added.

The first line therefore gives 38 + 1008 + 1005 + 10 = 2061

Second line : 4 + 3 + 2 + 14 (the answer to the sum, although I would calculate this as 10) + 10 (for the x) = 33

Third line : 6 + 5 + 1 (the answer) = 12

Add them all up : 2061 + 33 + 12 = 2106

I've looked at this for a while now and agree it is a joke. I doubt the Mint will release the answer willingly as if they do it will show how tenous and unwinnable a lot of their games are.

Think about the letter grid games they have where you need to place a letter in each of 4 horizontal words to form a vetical word downwards. There are probably about 500 different possiblities for words doing this and yet people keep on ringing in and the puzzle is rarely if ever solved.

It shows a lot about the mentality of the British public I guess....

I think I got why the first numerals were 21.

Nineteen - 5= 14
4+3=7

14+7=21

Hmmm... 2+6=8-5=3 then I went back to the second equation and multiplied 3 by 2 which would make it 06.

This answer good enough?

It's a mystery. That has been on the telly for weeks unsolved. I can't believe they didn't explain where 2106 came from!!!

I'm going to keep an eye on this post to see if anyone knows it. And I'll put a question to the mint as well. They have to explain, else they don't have a proper quiz and they will get into trouble.

its one of those stupid ones where there are so many possibilities about which numbers to use. what you have to do is take each number mentioned as well as each sum given and add the totals. e.g. in the first line you have 19 - 5 which gives you both numbers and the sum, so you have: 19,5, 19-5, etc. you can probably also count the 'nine' part of 'nineteen' as a seperate number as well. the possibilities are almost endless, especially when you split a sum into different groupings. basically, it could be one of many answers. i can't say for sure how to work it out coz there are many ways of doing it but i'm sure its not too difficult.

iv seen loads of these kinds on tv quiz shows. i think you work out the calculations and add the answers of them to all the numbers in the questions. try it an see if it works.
also add any hidden numbers as well.

Those programmes irritate me. They ask questions like "What colour is black?" and then you get people on the phones saying "Orange", "Mauve", "436", "The Pope" etc etc...until someone finally rings up and says "Coldplay" and the alarms go off and the person wins £3000. WHAT THE??!!!

Can't stand them, can't stand them, can't stand them...oooh I'm getting wound up just thinking about them....aaargghhh!!!

And don't even get me started on those irritating presenters!! AAaaarrgghhh!!!
