The female condom is a polyurethane sheath or pouch about 17 cm (6.5 inches) in length. It is worn by a woman during sex. It entirely lines the vagina and it helps to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV.

Yes, it's like a bag (sort of) that is inserted before sex. You can read about female condoms and other types of contraception at www.plannedparenthood.org
I've never tried them and probably won't. Their effectiveness rating isn't something I'm comfortable with on it's own and I've quit using condoms for the most part and just use the pill since entering a long term monogamous relationship.

I don't know if they call them condoms - but there are two things that work similar to a condom that women can use.
A cap - which is a rubberized, re-usable barrier that a woman places inside to prevent fertilization from a man.
A diaphragm - is similar only looks a bit different. It's wider in diameter.
These are both re-usable and you should be able to get them from your family doctor or family planning clinic.
I have used the diaphragm and it works very well. See the link below for more details.

You must be referring to Full Body Condoms, which have yet to be approved by the FDA. These were developed by Christian Fundamentalists who object to the male condom. Female condoms may not reach the public though, since a known side effect is suffocation. The condom's designers insisted that it must cover the female form from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet. The developers of the condom insist that it is better to die in purity than to live in sin.

Yes, long time ago. The woman inserts it inside, like a sort of bag. It is not comfortable at all and therefore has been a failure on the market.
