No other planet has been a greater source of fascination for mankind than Mars. The reason behind Mars’ continuing appeal is the possibility that the red planet may support life. Now, this possibility has just improved.
By mapping minerals on the Martian surface scientists have found valuable clues as to where life might have developed. These findings have been reported in the recent issue of Science.
Using OMEGA (Visible and Infrared Mineralogical Mapping Spectrometer) on European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft, scientists have discovered three Martian geological periods, which show that large water bodies could have been present on Mars four billion years ago.
