In retrospect, was "The Captain and Toneille" the apex of the American rock experience?

And has it been in decline ever since?

Hmmmmmmmm.... The Captain ran one of the most productive recording studios in California. I can't remember it's name at the moment but 'everybody' recorded there. Then, Toni Tenille laid the female vocals down for Pink Floyd's The Wall,,, and yeah I can see a decline after that... ;-) I will have to say though, that when the Captain & Tenille hit superstardom, they never sold out, they faded away...
