its plays ps2 games and dvds but it will not play ps1 games

They are so cheap now buy a new one..a repair would probably cost more than a new unit...

Step by step instructions of how to try and fix it, if it is one of the old ps2, then normally it is the lens which starts giving problems, so have a look at this...
