Legolas Greenleaf was a prince of Mirkwood. it didnt play a part in Lord of the rings but featured heavily in the Hobbit (although legolas wasn't in that book the horrible wee spiders, the decendants of shelob that live in mirkwood were featured).

The elf city of Lothlorien were home to celeborn, galadriel and Haldir (i think someone is getting haldir confused with legolas - *shrugs* they're both blond and pretty.

Rivendel was home to Elrond his daughter, Arwen and Glorfindel the character that showed up at the ford to take the injured frodo to rivendell in FOTR (he was usurped by stupid arwen in the film).

Legolas was born in MIRKWOOD, he was the son of King Thranduil (the same elves that capture Bilbo and the dwarfs in the Hobbit). He travelled to Rivendell to warn Gandalf about the escape of Gollum who was earlier placed in there custody and there becomes a member of the Fellowship of the Rings.
After the wars Legolas takes a number of followers into Ithilien to start a colony. After the death of Aragorn he and Gimli explore all the places that they said they would, namely Fangorn forest and the caves at Helms Deep before they set out for the Undying Lands, never to be seen or heard from again.
Just a FYI not all of the elves travelled to the Undying Lands, some stayed in Middle Earth but shunned all outside contact and finally passed over into myth.
