I beleive the theories on the moons creation are always changing. the one I was always tought was that you had two similar sized panets that were hot bodies and still forming. One coliided with the other such that many of its heavy metals were transferred. This left a large planet with heavy metals and an iron core (earth) and a smaller less dense sattelitte. (moon)

this is theory and it seems to change every year.

the moon was not once two planets but you can see how this may have been mentioned as it could have formed from the collision of two planets though these did not form into one

The moon was probably formed from many pieces of debris thrown up when the Earth was smacked by a Mars sized body about 4.5 billion years ago. Most of the other planet, including the core was absorbed into the Earth, which was molten for a while after the collision. This theory is backed up by the fact that the moon is mostly made of mantle type rock and has very little iron in it. If it had formed on it's own, it would have about the same percentage of iron as Earth.
