They are probably trying to judge what type of environment you come from.

actually its more likely to be a general question to keep a conversation going. A bit like commenting on the weather.

sometimes there is common ground that you can both talk about

superficial people may judge you by your social class, but would you really want to be friends with someone so shallow any way?

Why don't you just say, hmmm, what do your parents do, and see what they say. If they say their parents are janitors, or garbage collectors, then you will know they are not up to anything. You could down play it, or just pass it up, and say, you don't know for sure, as they work in the office, etc. If they say their parents are Vice Presidents or President's of a corporation, then you know they are fishing for information, like if your parents are as important as theirs is, in that case, you can say whatever, but just know that you might have a snob here. Otherwise, they may not even care what your folks did.... That is just my opinion. They may be sizing you up, based on your parent's occupation and if you are as rich as they are, etc.

Probably not, they might just want to know what your parents do for a living.
