I'm not quite sure where this is all going....

well, it's hard to say. African elephants are much bigger than Indian elephants, so you'd think they'd be stronger, and therefore a better choice for holding up the world.
on the other hand, Indian elephants are domesticated so you'd think they'd be better disciplined and less prone to running higgledy piggledy and dropping the world.
plus, Terry Pratchet wasn't the first guy to suggest this means of support for the world (well, maybe for the discworld). I believe it was the ancient Greek philosopher Xeno who was the first one to put the idea of elephants and turtles holding up the world into writing. those ancient Greeks had more contact with Indian civilization than they did with sub-saharan African societies, so maybe that's what he was thinking about.
on the other hand, that's Xeno, but not necessarily Terry Pratchet. Who knows what kinds of societies he's in contact with.
so I'm going to go with Indian.

African if the book covers are anything to go by:

here we can clearly see the distinctive ear shape if the african elephant. Interestingly an african elephants right ear resembles the shape of africa and an indian elephants right ear resembles the shape of india.
