or do people just do that for heat. If there is an advantage to letting your call idle while you wait for the temperature gauge to start moving up, what is it? If it's bad for your engine to just start driving in frigid cold weather immediately after starting your car up, what harm exactly are you doing?

The reason people warm up their car in the winter is many fold. If there is a problem with your antifreeze and it is too lean and it has gotten too cold, there could be ice in your engine and may resrict coolant from entering the engine, letting your engine warm up slowly allows any ice that has formed to melt and prevents too much heat in your engine, this avoids warping, damaging your pistons or other components. Also, warming up your engine also allows the oil in your engine to warm up. Oil becomes less viscious with cold, think of your frying pan after you cook, the oil goes from liquid to solid, this happens in your engine as well to a certain degree, the oil that has been sitting in the cold all night needs to be heated up to regain its viscosity, then your engine will run just fine.
Bottom line, warm up your car if it gets too cold, above freezing there is nothing to worry about, and its only for a few minutes, make sure you do it outside or at least leave your garage door up, carbon monoxide is very dangerous. It takes only a few seconds of no lubrication or excess heat to do thousands of dollars worth of damage to your engine.

It's definitely better to let your car's engine warm up in the
winter before driving it off. Wait for a few minutes to let the
cold engine oil warms up to circulate and lubricate the engine
for smooth running. By looking at the pressure oil gauge, the indicator should rise towards the center and this signals that
the engine is warm enough for the car to be driven off.
If you run with a cold engine, it may damage certain parts in the
engine because of friction as the oil is not ready and warm
enough to circulate and lubricate the engine.

My brother assures me that you do need to start a car in winter time and let it run alteast 20 minutes so you don't seize the pistons nor the fuel line and bunch of other stuff .. all this and I drive a jeep with is a convertible.. I live in Michigan and it's almost time for snow !1

Yes, letting your car idle allows all the fluids to heat up and become less viscous (thick) this helps keep your car from stalling and helps lubricate the moving parts. Ill put it this way your pistons could freeze up and that's just a whole different story.

Woody probably gave you he best answer. Environmentalists will say you do not have to ,because you are wasting fuel and polluting the air. But I believe the benefits of warming an engine out weight the extra fuel costs. It doesn't have to be right up to temp , but drive with reduced speeds and any hard acceleration until the temp comes up to normal

There's no harm driving your car cold, but if it is freezing weather, you won't be able to. I let my car idle for a few minutes and I find that it drives better.

it truly is actual extra effective to enable your automobile's engine heat up contained in the iciness earlier driving it off. anticipate a jiffy to enable the chilly engine oil warms as much as flow and lubricate the engine for gentle working. by potential of finding on the rigidity oil gauge, the indicator would desire to upward push in the direction of the midsection and this alerts that the engine is heat sufficient for the automobile to be pushed off. in case you run with a chilly engine, it ought to harm particular factors contained in the engine because of the fact of friction because of the fact the oil isn't waiting and heat sufficient to flow and lubricate the engine.

no harm as much as i can tell, but it will run better with the engine block warmed up, some old cars won't even start up with having an engine block heater on it the night before.

so warm up your car before you drive it, it might die on you if you don't!
