sticking to roman traditions, octavian showed that he was not going to be like marc anthony and other leaders that were going crazy for cleopatra and egyptian customs. the roman people were afraid that their country was going to be turned into an eastern absolute monarchy and maybe also the capital could be moved to alexandria, while augustus was reliable as a true roman, he even started to build his mausoleum in rome when he was only about 20 years old to show that he would have stayed in rome and keep rome at its height

Augustus built the Mausoleum of Augustus before he reached the age of 30 so that the people of Rome would connect him with the founders of Rome along with showing his connection to being a descendant of deities (gods). The Mausoleum was built in the style of the traditional Etruscan house. It was a grandiose place for reflection of the peoples as well.

this is one of many ways that Augustus became powerful.

Octavius used tradition to show respect for the people's sensibilities. Actually it was a very astute political move on his part to do it. He just wanted to consolidate his power.
