When you say "the search for food", I'm thinking in the lines of cave dwelling men who actually hunt for their own food. The quality of food affects humans a lot but that is more on the biologically (haha, look at the fast food industry @_@). Socially, the search for food probably led them to group huntings but those are only a small part of the society though still very important.
On the contrary, sex as we all know it get people to act in more crazy ways than one. They dressed and acted in ways to attract the person whom they want to have sex with. But did this contribute a lot to society's development? Maybe only in the lines of the powerful marrying the more powerful and things like that.
So to answer the question to which one has a greater effect, it is hard to say without any basis. I think it probably is sex because the interaction affects more people. While everybody eats, not everybody searches for food but we are all biologically driven to propegate I mean ermm.. have sex.

Our strongest instincts are for water, survival and sex. Without these the human race would have died out years ago, food is important but we can live without it for a certain amount of time.
