Are you in a hurry? About 6-hours straight driving from Phoenix to LA, then another 5-6/hrs to San Fran. If you are not in a hurry, I would recommend taking a week and making a good trip out of it. Phoenix to San Diego to see some of the sights there, then an hour North to LA to see the sights of interest there, then North through the Sequoias and Yellowstone, then Monterey Bay and see the aquarium, then through wine country to San Fran.

Depends on the route. I would go the Bakersfield/Barstow route instead of taking I5 down to L.A. area and then going east on I10. Nice drive, less traffic, cool roadside stuff to see :)
