Launch MSWord; click Help; click "About Microsoft Word". The version details appear at the top of the dialogue box that appears.

Hi there
When you open Microsoft Word, the screen that appears just before your wordprocessing screen actually appears, should tell you what version you're using.
If it isn't;t displayed long enough for you to see it, go to your start menu, select control panel and select the add/remove programs option. Here, you will find a list of all programs you have installed. It should be displayed here. If the version you have is older than Microsoft Office 2000, you may not be able to receive updates for it.
Hope this helps.
Scott

Once you open the program across the top you'll see "file edit view" etc.......At the far right hand side you'll see"Help" click on help look for "About Microsoft Word" click on it then a new box should pop up. Across the top you should see something like
Microsoft (R) Word 2000 (10.2627.2625)
And that's it

That is guaranteed - on the menu bar click help, then About item - the version should be obvious at the screen that will appear.

ha, the answer above me is perfect; follow those instructions and you can't go wrong.
I'm just "answering" because I needed to say that listing 'duh' as a source made me laugh, like, out loud.
