My cell phone switched to analog automaticly when I went out of town and I wasn't able to send or receive text messages or surf the web. I was still able to send and receive calls though.

think analog as old school and digital more up to date. when you go to places that are harder to get a signal your phone will switch to analog-old school-because the place its at is old school

something like that (in simple terms)

Analog is the way regular land line phones work. That's why you could send text message cause that requires a digital signal.

analog is the very first communication means and the equip is not up to date with the digital and gsm technology to perform the advanced tasks such as sms and web browsing. the signals are completely different but you still can make and receive calls when picking up an analog signal
