The Golden Era of hockey in India was the period from 1928 - 1956 when India won 6 consecutive gold medals in the Olympics. The last one was at the Moscow Olympics 1980. How many world cups has India won in Cricket? - One that too in 1983. Enough of statistics. Check the comparison. Why is so much money pumped into cricket inspite of Hockey being the national game of India? The only answer I can find is "Media". No one wants to cover hockey or any other sport besides cricket. Not to say that we are great in cricket either. The cricketers get pampered more than enough which is not fair. Every major product is marketed by a cricketer, be it toothpaste or motorcycles or Polio. I don't see any hockey players too much. Why?
The Media has to be more responsible and cover more events and sponsors will come up by themselves. Let's face it "MONEY" is a big driving force and not all the cricketers are in the team because they are willing to represent the country. Smaller and poorer nations that India are doing far better at the World Cup/Olympics.
It is not point blaming the Hockey head or the tail, or the coach or the players. The media is more interested in giving extra coverage to Sachin's heavy bat and Sachin's tennis elbow and Saurav's extra marital affairs - Who cares? They don't cover the real issues, because "Reality bites" and no one is really interested in the truth. The relationship is simple, no Media so no awareness, no awareness so no sponsors, no sponsors so no money, no money so no motivation.......
Sad thing that inspite of holding a record in Olympics for the maximum Golds in any discipline we always struggle to qualify for the World cup/Olympics.
Get up, stand up... Don't give up the fight..

First of all, the IHF(Indian Hockey Federation) president KPS Gill should be forced to step down. In a recent TV interview, after India's debacle in the recent hockey, he actually claimed that Indian hockey has improved during his tenure.
Secondly, Indian hockey needs a foreign coach like Australian Rick Charlesworth, or some renowned German or Dutch coach. Also the coach should be appointed for a fixed tenure of at least 3 years. We have seen the disastrous results of tinkering with the coaches' position and appointing 3-4 coaches for the Indian hockey team per year.
Thirdly, the media should give more attention to hockey and sports coverage to major hockey tournaments like the Champions' Trophy and the hockey World Cup should be increased. Currently the media devotes too much attention to cricket, so much so that hockey barely deserves a mention in the sports pages of major newspapers. I also feel that our cricket-crazy Indian public is somewhat too blame for this situation. We should have equal emphasis for all sports just like the Australians. The Australians love their cricket but they also follow other sports like hockey, football, tennis etc.

One has to go from the route levels. All domestic matches should be compitative, and are to be played with true spirit of the game. These domestic matches should grab spectatotrs. For this all state government should take action to bring the spectators in to the ground, give some money to all the state boards for facilities, improvement on ground condition, players etc. Even central government and richest sports board in India BCCI also should help on this. Players should get good exposure, money, sponsership, compitativeness, training before playing an domestic match. State and central govt. should make compulsary to play hockey in all scholls and colleges and their participation in a matches to improve the national game. So that childrens can get the idea of Hockey along with cricket. Also at present dont allow the national team to participate in very much international level as their level is par below than that, train them in foreign academies, give ample match exposure on foreign domestic matches like Holand, Australia, Germany etc. let them to show real spirit, also pay the players some kind of money during this time as they reqired some boost. Select some good foreign coaches atleast at present to train the players in academies, change the strategy give exposure to modern techniques, take the suggestion from retired senior players.
Do all this without any corruption, politics and then see why Indian team will not bounce back. I think it will take min. of 5 - 8 years, but fans should wait.

Hockey needs one thing the media. Promote hockey as they promote some silly incidents which unimportant to say the least.
With media behind hockey, sponsorships wouldn't be far behind and there will be healthy competition to monopolistic game of cricket now. And under-performing IPS Gill needs to be done away with. Bhaskaran unsuccessful twice before shouldn't have been given the third chance(even gods were amazed!!). Hockey player being shot in the train, don't they have aeroplanes which our crickets use...why this double standards? facilities must be similar to cricketers as both represent the country.... It needs to be driven into Indians blood again so kids aspire to be Jugraj Singh not another sachin!!!

First & foremost is to have professional set of selectors to select the Indian team. Few people trying to control the game for too long a period has led to the present state of decline. The game ought to have taken centre stage in india when we had won many Olympic & world championships.
Unless more money is coming by way of sponsorship the game will not be motivating for yougsters - who always have the option of earning more money through better jobs or by playing cricket, tennis, Badminton, snooker etc which are very popular today.

The first and foremost is to do away with any bureaucratic and political involvement. The second is the sponsors must evolve a mechanism by which they can infuse their management skills in the selection of select professional managers. Selection team who should have a proper disciplined hierarchy by which in the process of selection no selector is repeated in or involved in the next higher selection process in any way. And in the last and final phase of selection from the estimated double the expected team size of finalists the team should select its own team from amongst themselves so the team works as a group of friends or an orchestra in absolute tuning. Thus we have two teams in the end, let the best then be the winners.

Indian hockey team should be trained in basic leesons to take penalty corners. The coach should understand that mere stick play won't work. Conversion of penalty corners are vital.
Last champions trophy what we've seen that india is playing throughout but conversion rate of penalty corners is zero. Team members should show unity rather than individual stick works. Defence should be strenghtened like what our womens team has proved

Publicity, Physical fitness, Coaching, Turfs and similar factors have been repeated from time to time.. all of us have seen what the team has gone through, but sad none of us has pointed out to eradicate politics from IHF.. i would honestly request those at the top to start in terms of Indian team winning, and change their attitude of "individual victories". India has proved it in cricket - from nowhere in 1979 to champions in 1983 we have shown we can do it if we want to, so why not hockey?

Indian hockey team needs tone themselves physically. Another aspect is they should have a good coach who motivates them and trains them with the skills to convert penalties into actual goals.
