I have the Yamaha xv Virago 535 as stated, just bought it monday, filled it up and drove 75 miles. It has no petrol gauge but on my last bike I was able to get about 170 miles before switching to reserve so I guessed this may be about the same. However, after the 75 miles it started coughing and choking, then after a few jumps it stopped and wouldn't start again. Of course I hadn't imagined it would be a petrol issue and so sent it to a garage, they said it was running on fumes and had been sucking in crap from the air (plenty of that in central London!) so I guess it may have run out of petrol, but that sounds waaay too low mileage capability to me! Does anyone know how much mileage I should be getting? Anyone have an idea of something else it may be (from past experience, not just guesses:) )
Ta!

the 535 has two tanks, a tiny one in the normal position and another under the seat. the pipes joining them are not big enough (in my opinion) so you have to wait and fill up slowly. Sounds like you only filled the top one and it drained down to maiin tank so it only had about 2 gal or less (10 litres?) which would give you about 37mpg, not too bad for driving in central London.
BTW, if the carbs need removal for cleaning, dont do it by the manual (you have to pretty much remove engine) remove the manifolds from cylinder head (8mm spanner, 4 bolts)

There are a lot of different things that can come into play in your scenario. How many gallons of gas did you put in? I'd say if you were getting under 45 mpg in the city (higher on open road) you probably have a carbeurater problem. You're going to have to find a techboard for the Virago and talk to some people about setting up your carbs.

RE: I.m considering buying a 1994 Yamaha Virago 535... any thoughts? I'm a bit scared of the air-cooled engine..? I'm a bit scared of the air cooled engine, I've heard 'cautions' about them. Things like, Virago's aren't even good for cruising because the engine will overheat. I live on the central california coast (san jose, santa cruz, san francisco) so it never gets TOO hot here... but how long can I...

Tank size may be the issue. I used to ride a Magot C and the capacity of the tank was only about 80 miles. You might want to change the petrol tank.

P.S. You bought a Virago? Snigger.

The 535 has a 13.5 litre tank, or almost 3 gallons (UK gallons).

You should be getting closer to 150 miles before reserve on your bike. Get it checked out.
